Level 7 (postgraduate), 10 Credits

The course will cover the use of Chinese medical diagnostics as specific to obstetrics; using the obstetric history, the medical history, obstetric signs and symptoms, pulse and tongue, and palpation to develop and confirm diagnosis and treatment. Acupuncture treatment is discussed in particular reference to the effect of the underlying constitutional condition on the overlying condition of pregnancy.

Palpation, examination, point selection, needling techniques, types of needles and auxiliary treatments, as well as treatment duration and frequency will be discussed through the use of case histories, and through practice work in a clinical classroom setting.

The course is designed to equip the acupuncturist to safely and effectively adjunct western maternity care. There is a continuous discussion of ‘scope of practice’ throughout the 4 teaching days. This course is designed to effectively equip the acupuncturist to fully understand the limitations of acupuncture treatment in obstetrics, as well as to highlight the opportunities to utilise acupuncture as a safe and effective adjunct or alternative to the western protocol treatment.

All aspects of western obstetric intervention treatment will be covered to include: ultrasound, cervical examination, ECV, medical induction, foetal heart monitoring, ARM, epidural, pharmaceutical pain relief, caesarean section, and suturing.

All relevant research in the subject of obstetric acupuncture and acupressure will be referenced and referred to throughout the course, as well as relevant studies pertaining to western intervention treatments.
